إنّ وصف الملك جلجامش بأنه ملك مستبد وظالم يغتصب الفتيات العذارى قبل دخول أزواجهن عليهن، وتذمّر الناس منه ومن ثم تحوّله في الأخير إلى ملك متحضّر سعى إلى بناء مدينته أوروك وعبّد طرقاتها، وحرصه على رفاهية شعبه، جميعها مؤشرات واضحة على أن المجتمع العراقي القديم توافر على نظام سياسي فيه من القوانين والشرائع والمؤسسات السياسية، كمجلس الشيوخ، ما جعله قادراً على إنشاء دولة متميّزة وذات دور تاريخي سبقت غيرها في جوانب كثيرة ثقافياً وإجتماعياً وسياسياً وحضارياً.
الشاعر والباحث هربرت ميسن شاعر مرهف الحس، شكّلت له ملحمة جلجامش هاجساً شخصياً قوياً ودافعاً مؤثراً لإعادة كتابتها وفق رؤيته الشعرية الخاصة، منذ أن اطلع عليها لأول مرة، وبقي هذا الهاجس يلحّ عليه طوال خمسة عشر عاماً حتى انتهى من نصه هذا بعدما بحث في المزيد من المعرفة والتقصّي عن الملحمة وبطلها جلجامش، خصوصاً بعدما تلاءمت مع نفسه في جوهرها الفكري، وما تناولته من أسئلة جريئة عن غاية الوجود البشري ومشكلة الموت وتحديداً موت من نحبّهم والشجاعة التي جابه بها بطل الملحمة القدر الذي أقرّته الإلهة المزعومة على صديقة أنكيدو.
فضلاً عن ذلك، فإنّ ميسن أكاديمي بارز متخصّص في أدب الشرق القديم وقد ألّف في ذلك كتباً ودراسات من بينها كتابه المهم عن المتصوّف العربي الحلاّج. ولهذا، فهو هنا يعمل بحذر ودقة العالم الأمين وجمالية الشاعر الرؤبوي، فيعيد كتابة هذه الملحمة بتكنيك شعري متميّز يراعي فيه التوازنات النصية والإيقاعات في الأحداث ونموّها وتطور الشخصيات من الناحية الدرامية، وهو في الوقت نفسه يبقى أمينا لروح النص القديم، الذي تتعدد رواياته وتختلف إلى حدٍّ ما، كما أنها نُشرت على شكل أجزاء فيها الكثير من الخروم والقطع.
