إن من يلقي نظرة على خريطة العالم العربي وقد استأثرت بلدانه بالقسم الشمالي من القارة الأفريقية على امتداد البحر المتوسط والمحيط الأطلسي، من طنجة شمالاً، حتى نهر السنغال في الجنوب، وبالقسم الغربي من القارة الآسيوسية على امتداد الساحل الشرقي للبحر المتوسط، وعلى جانبي البحر الأحمر، وعلى ساحل المحيط الهندي، من باب المندب شمالاً حتى كسمايو في الصومال عند خطّ الاستواء، وعلى ساحل بحر العرب والساحل الجنوبي الغربي للخليج العربي، ليأخذه العجب وتتملكه الدهشة، ويمتلئ اعتزازاً وهو يرى هذه الرقعة الشاسعة المترامية الأطراف، وهاتيك الشواطئ التي تبلغ آلاف الكيلومترات وهي تتعرج أو تستقيم على طول البحار والمحيطات.
وإن من يدرك أن مساحة رقعة البلدان العربية هي المساحة الثانية في العالم بعد مساحة الاتحاد السوفياتي-سابقاً-إن من يدرك هذا ليتوق إلى التعرف إلى هذا الجزء المهم والنفيس من العالم، بكل ثرواته وخيراته وأنهاره وسهوله ووديانه وبحيراته وبحاره وصحاريه وجباله.
وقد رغب الدكتور يحيى الشامي في إشراك القارئ العربي في هذه المعرفة وذاك العلم، فكان هذا الكتاب الذي يطلعنا على جانب من أهم جوانب ثروات الوطن العربي، عنى المؤلف بالاطلاع على عواصم بلادنا العربية وأهم مدنها التي إليها ننتمي وبها نعتز ونفتخر.
وقد قسّم الكتاب إلى قسمين هما: 1-أهم المدن العربية الآسيوية، 2-أهم المدن العربية الأفريقية. ولقد جعل من كل قسم فصولاً ينتظم كل منها بلداً عربياً بعينه، مراعياً في هذا التقسيم قواعد الترتيب الألفبائي.
