لبيد بن ربيعة العامري، شاعر من الشعراء المخضرمين الذين عاشوا ردحاً من الزمن في العصر الجاهلي، حيث ربقة المادّة، وجفاف الروح، وآخرين في الإسلام، حيث الانفتاح وانعتاق الروح من اسارها المادي حيث نال في شعره من الشهرة والمكانة ما لم ينله الآخرون. وقد أسلم لبيد وحسن إسلامه، وارتقى شعره في الإسلام درجات عن شعره الجاهلي لجهة المستوى الفني، والأداء التعبيري والتصويري.
ولبيد يكاد يكون الشاعر الوحيد الذي أثنى النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم لما سئل عن أصدق بيت من الشعر قالته العرب، فقال قوله المشهور الذي ما فتئ صداه يتردد على الألسن منذ ذلك الزمان، قال: أصدق بيت قالته العرب، قول لبيد: ألا كل شيء ما خلا الله باطل/وكل نعيم، لا محالة، زائلٌ.
إعجاباً بهذا الشاعر الذي نبّه على حتمية زوال النعيم، وبطلان كل شيء إلا الله سبحانه، وتنويهاً بشعره الذي تبوأ به مكانة عالية ما جعل ابن سلاّم يضعه واحداً من شعراء أربعة هم أصحاب الطبقة الثالثة من طبقات الشعراء الجاهليين. إعجاباً بهذا الشاعر، وهو أحد أصحاب المعلقات العشر، وتنويهاً بشعره الذي امتاز به من الشعراء الآخرين، كان هذا الكتاب الذي ضمّ دراسة اتبع فيها الباحث المنهج التاريخي التكاملي التحليلي، وجاءت هذه الدارسة ضمن فصول الكتاب الثمانية التي حملت العناوين التالية: سيرة حياته، مكانته الشعرية، الطلل والغزل، الوصف، الرثاء، الفخر، شعره الديني، التأمل والحكمة.
وإتماماً للفائدة، وإغناءً للدراسة فقد أنهى الباحث الكتاب بإثبات مطولة لبيد الميمية الهائية، وهي معلقته التي استحق بها لبيد أن يكون واحداً من أصحاب المعلقات العشر، فشرح أبياتها، وما غمض من مفرداتها وما التبس من معانيها.
