الأعشى، صاحب عنوان هذا الكتاب، هو شاعر من أعظم شعراء بكر، وقد عرف بصناجة العرب وذلك لأن شعره ذاع صيته، فكانوا يتفنون به، ويرددونه في المجالس فتردد أصداءه الأقطار. ذلل ناصية الشعر وهو فتىً، فحفل شعره الذي جمع لاحقاً في ميدان، فكان موزعاً على عدد من الأغراض الشعرية المتفرقة، كالغزل، والطلل، والمدح، والهجاء، والفخر، والخمرة، وكان يزعم أن شيطاناً اسمه مسحل، يلهمه الشعر، ويلقنه إياه.
فمن هو الأعشى؟ ما قصصه ونوادره؟ ما مكانته الشعرية بالتفصيل؟ هذا ما يتضمنه الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، الذي تضمن ثمانية فصول كانت على التوالي: 1-سيرة حياته، بعض قصصه ونوادره، 2-مكانته الشعرية، 3-شواهد على شاعريته، 4-المدح، 5-الهجاء، 6-الفخر، 7-الغزل، 8-هل كان الأعشى حكيماً.
