لقد عم الإسلام وانتشر في مناطق عديدة من العالم، فهو لم يعد محصوراً في المنطقة العربية، بل تعداها إلى أصقاع كثيرة في آسيا وأفريقيا وأوروبا، وأسست من خلال ذلك الكثير من الدول الإسلامية التي اعتمدت على الشريعة الإسلامية في نظامها وحكمها وتشريعها.
إضافة إلى تلك الدول التي اعتمدت الإسلام تشريعاً لها، فقد دخل الإسلام كثيراً من الدول عن طريق التجارة وغيرها، وأصبح هناك الكثير من المدن التي طبعت بطابع الإسلام في مبانيها ومساجدها ومراكزها التعليمية.
والواقع أن المؤلف قد أصدر قبل هذه الموسوعة التي تحمل موسوعة المدن الإسلامية موسوعة أخرى تحمل عنوان موسوعة المدن العربية، وقد لاقت تلك الموسوعة رواجاً من القراء والدارسين، وهذا مما حدا به إلى التفرغ لكتابة هذه الموسوعة التي يرى أنها سوف تسد فراغاً في المكتبة العربية، حيث أن هذا الجانب إن لم يكن مفقدواً في المكتبات فهو قليل جداً، ودون استفاضة في المعلومات، ودقة في الموضوعات.
وقد اعتمد في خطت سرد تلك المدن الإسلامية حسب الدولة التي تنتمي إليها، صحيح أن بعض المدن لا تنتمي إلى دول إسلامية، كمدن في الصين أو بلغاريا أو روسيا وغيرها من الدول غير المسلمة، إلا أن هذه المدن تدين بالإسلام ويعتنق أهلها الدين الإسلامي حيث يظهر ذلك في مساجدها ومراكزها العلمية.
كما رأى أن يقدم هذه الدول التي تنتمي إليها تلك المدن الإسلامية حسب الحروف الهجائية، وقصد في ذلك التسهيل لكل الراغبين في الإطلاع على هذه المدن ومعرفة حقيقة الإسلام فيها، متحدثين عن موقعها ونشاطها الاقتصادي، مع نبذة تاريخية تساعد على فهم الوسيلة التي وصل الإسلام إليها.
