هذا الكتاب يضم معجماً للألفاظ الدخيلة في اللهجة العراقية الدارجة جمعها المؤلف ورتبها وخرجها؛ تخريجاً جديداً يلائمها. هذا ولم يكتف بذلك بل غرز جهوده بإيراد الأمثلة والشواهد المتداولة بين العامة ببغداد ومدن العراق الأخرى ومقارنتها بنظائرها من الألفاظ الشائعة الاستعمال في الأقطار العربية، معتمداً على مصادرها ومراجعها الأدبية والتاريخية والاجتماعية وغيرها. ولو نظرنا سريعاً إلى تلك المصادر والمراجع وإلى تنوف على الستين بين كتاب ومجلة وصحيفة، لألفينا جمهرة من المفردات والألفاظ واللهجات التي درج المسنون على نطقها باستقامة معجماً يعد مرجعاً يعتمد عليه. لقد توخى المؤلف في معجمه هذا التبسيط والإيجاز؛ لأن الخوض في اللفظة الواحدة والتعمق في معانيها ودلالاتها وجذورها تحتاج إلى مجلدات ضخمة، ولهذا الغرض حرص المؤلف أني كون معجمه وسطاً. غير أن ما يميز هذا المعجم عن غيره هو سهولة الرجوع إليه واستخراج الألفاظ الدخيلة إلى لغتنا الفصحى من اللغات القديمة كالأكدية والبابلية والآرامية ومن اللغات الشرقية كالتركية والفارسية والهندية، يضاف إلى ذلك ما دخل أو انحدر عن اللغات الإنكليزية والفرنسية والإيطالية واليونانية وغيرها.
