كانت ثورة 1920 التي فجرها العراقيون بمثابة حجر الزاوية في بناء الدولة العراقية الحديثة التي تطلع العراقيون إلى قيامها عقب الاحتلال البريطاني لبلادهم أثر انهيار الدولة العثمانية. فبعد أن أعلن انتداب بريطانيا على العراق في مؤتمر سان ريمو أراد البريطانيون تشكيل جهاز سياسي يتحكمون من خلاله بمقدرات العراق وكان السر أرنولد ويلسن وكيلاً للحاكم الملكي العام في عهد الاحتلال البريطاني للعراق وقد نشبت الثورة في عهده وهو الذي حرض على إبقاء العراق تابعاً محكومة الهند وما يعنيه هذا من جعله مهجراً مفتوحاً لليهود وغيرهم من أقطار العالم.
والسر ويلسون أحد الذي كتبوا عن الثورة العراقية الكبرى، من وجهة نظر المستعمر المحتل، حيث يصف وقائع الثورة وميادينها، والحركات العسكرية التي رافقتها. كما يتحدث عن مقدمات الثورة وأسبابها. وما كتبه يعد وثيقة هامة لأنها صدرت عن رجل عمل في العراق وعاصر أحداث الثورة العراقية وهو في كل هذا إنما يصدر عن رغبته في الدفاع عن أعماله ملقياً اللوم على عاتق غيره في الأخطاء التي ارتكبت في العراق من قبل الساسة البريطانيين.
