المرأة في الثلاثين حكاية امرأة حساسة, ذكية, وجميلة, أخطأت في الزواج من ضابط تافه وفظ, همه أن يستمتع بمفاتن زوجته, دون الانتباه إلى مراعاة عواطفها وأحاسيسها في بدء الحياة الزوجية. إنها رواية تهدف إلى تصوير الأعراض التي تشير إلى نفور الزوجة من علاقة تتجلى فيها أنانية الزوج ولامبالاته فتسعى إلى الأمومة لتعفي نفسها من الواجب الزوجي. تنجب ابنة لا تشعر نحوها بأية عاطفة إنها ابنة للواجب- تريد المحافظة على قدسية الرباط الزوجي لكنها تستجيب لنداء حب عذري مع نبيل إنكليزي تفجع به. ثم تسقط في حب شهواني مع دبلوماسي شاب تنجب منه أبناء غير شرعيين, وتعاقب بقسوة على أخطائها: تدفع الطفلة, ابنة الواجب, أخاها- ثمرة الحب المحرم- إلى النهر ليموت غرقاً, وتكبت الأم ألمها والابنة إحساسها بالذنب لتهرب في عمر الشباب مع مجرم قاتل غدا قرصاناً شهيراً. ثم تقع ابنة الحب الثانية- موانا- في غرام ابن عشيق الأم- الأخ غير الشقيق لموانا- وتقضي الأم كمداً وحسرة. إنها رواية أراد بلزاك منها أن يقنع قراءه- وقارئاته خاصة بأن السعادة لا توجد إلا في احترام العائلة والزواج.
