بداية في الحياة هي إحدى روايات مشاهد من الحياة الخاصة التي أراد منها بلزاك أن تظهر المشاكل التي تطرحها الحياة في ممارستها الأولى التي تشتمل انفعالات الفتوة والشباب وأخطاؤهما وبداياتهما في العالم الاجتماعي. ويبدو أن أخت بلزاك لور أوحت لأخيها بموضوع الرواية وهو الادعاءات الكاذبة وما تجره على أصحابها من متاعب قد تضيع مستقبلهم وتسيء لمن حولهم, فبطل الرواية طالب الكلية أوسكار هوسون ينكر أمه التي يخجل من بساطتها ويوجه كلاماً جارحاً لرجل كبير القدر يسافر متنكراً في العربة العامة التي تضم الشباب المتبجحين. يستغل الروائي أحاديث العربة ليتعرض للمسألة الشرقية وغزو فرنسا للجزائر كما تنقله سيرة حياة النفاج أوسكار إلى التدرب المكتبي لدى المحامين الموثقين والتوسط المتجري وعلاقاته مع المسرح ونزاع الفلاحين مع النبلاء على ملكية الأراضي. ويلح بالرواية قصة لور (رحلة الكوكو) ولعل العبرة من هذا ما جاء في خاتمة القصة: أيها النفاجون المولودون أو من سيولدون، إن كانت أكاذيبكم تثير الضحك, وتغفر لكم في شبابكم فإنها تفقدكم كل اعتبار. فاحترام الكلمة هو الذي يكسب الإنسان التقدير, أياً كان المستوى الذي خلقه الله فيه.
