أورسول ميروه فتاة يتيمة مسكينة فقدت أبويها وهي في المهد, فتبناها نسيب عجوز طبيب, عضو مجمع وفولتيري ملور, وأحسن تربيتها مع أصدقائه الكاهن الورع, والضابط البونابرتي, والقاضي العادل. تتمكن الفتاة بتقواها أن تستميل الطبيب الى حظيرة الدين لكنه يفتش عن حقائق السماء من خلال أنوار العلم ويسعى الى الكشف عن كنه عالم الأرواح من خلال دراسات التنويم المغناطيسي والمغناطيسية في مظاهرها ما فوق الطبيعية, مثل الرؤيا عن بعد, أو القدرة على التنبؤ, أو حالات الوجد والانخطاف. بموت الطبيب يسعى ورثته الأقربون الى تجريد أورسول من كل شيء ولا يتورع أحدهم عن سرقة ما ادخرها له الطبيب لكن اصبع الله تعاقب الأشرار وتجزي الأخيار. وفي الرواية أيضاً قصة حب تقليدية بين الشاب النبيل ذي الدم الأزرق والفتاة اليتيمة تختتم بنهاية سعيدة رغم معارضة الأم. الرواية تمت بصلة وثيقة للدراسات الفلسفية في مواضيع تشترك فيها مع لويس لامبروسرافيتا كما أنها في معاناة الحبيبين أقرب الى مشاهد من الحياة الخاصة لكن بلزال أدرجها في مشاهد من حياة المقاطعات ليركز على قضية الإرث وجشع الورثة وصراع البرجوازية الناشئة والنبالة الهرمة في مدينة صغيرة من مدن الأقاليم.
