للإنسان حاجات إجتماعية متعددة يسعى لإشباعها، بعض هذه الحاجات مادي كالطعام والملبس والمسكن، وبعضها معنوي كالشعور بالأمن والترفيه عن النفس، وقد أدرك الإنسان منذ بدء وجوده على الأرض أنه لا يستطيع إشباع حاجاته على وجه مرضي إذا عاش منفرداً في عزلة عن غيره، فتحقيق الحاجات الإنسانية يحتاج إلى تضافر قوى العديد من الأفراد، يتعاونون على العمل أو يقسمون الأعمال فيما بينهم.
والإنسان كائن إجتماعي بطبعه، لا يحب أن يعيش منعزلاً عن غيره، بحيث يمكن أن يقال أن حب الإجتماع غريزة من الغرائز التي تتصف بها النفس البشرية، ولذلك يعتبر عزل الإنسان عن المجتمع من أقسى العقوبات التي يمكن أن توقع على فرد، فالإنسان لم يعش في أية فترة من فترات التاريخ منعزلاً عن غيره، بل عاش دائماً في جماعة، قد تصغر وتتناهي في الصغر فلا تضم سوى أفراد قلائل، وقد تكبر فتشمل المئات أو الألوف أو الملايين، ويعبر علماء الإجتماع عن هذه الظاهرة بأسبقية الجماعة، وبأن الإنسان مدني بطبعه.
والإنسان الذي عاش بمفرده كحي بن يقظان كما صوره الفيلسوف العربي ابن طفيل، أو "روين سانكروزو" كما تخيله الكاتب الإنجليزي دانييل ريفو لا وجود له في الواقع.
