يعد التعذيب من أخطر الانتهاكات التي يتعرض لها الإنسان لما يمثله من امتهان لكرامة الفرد وإيلاماً لضحاياه سواء كانت نفسية أم بدنية.. يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوع التعذيب الذي هو انتهاك لأبسط قواعد الإنسانية، ويعد جريمة لا يمكن تبريرها على الإطلاق. وهو مهما اختلفت صور ممارسته باختلاف العصور والأزمنة، إلا أنها تتماثل في الحط من قدر الفرد وكرامته.
وبعيداً عن الظروف العديدة التي تحيط بممارسات التعذيب، فإن كافة أساليب التعذيب الوحشي التي وصلت أحياناً إلى حد الموت قد لاقت مناهضة شديدة على المستويين الدولي والإقليمي، وهو ما يتناوله هذا الكتاب في شرحه للعديد من الاتفاقيات الدولية والإقليمية التي حاولت صياغة آليات يتم بموجبها منع التعذيب والوقاية منه إلا أنها لم تؤد النتيجة المرجوة، إذ أن الواقع يشير إلى أن النظام المعتمد في حماية الفرد من التعذيب لا يتناسب تماماً مع حجم ممارسة التعذيب التي ما زالت ترتكب في المعتقلات والسجون وخلف القضبان الموصدة والتي ليس آخرها ما ارتكب من صنوف التعذيب في سجن "أبو غريب" في العراق وما نشر من صور تشير إلى هذه الممارسات المسيئة بحق الفرد والإنسانية.
