لم تكن هي المرة الأولى التي أجد فيها نفسي خارج فضاء المدرسة العبوس وأسوارها الصفيقة. منذ حلول الربيع بدأنا نخرج إلى الطبيعة للتفسح، مرة أو مرتين في الأسبوع، حسبما يحلو لناظرنا. نساق في صف منتظم إلى غابة تقع على أكمة، أو إلى مرج متاخم لها أو إلى ساقية في وهدة خضراء يانعة. نلعب لعبة ذهنية في الهواء الطلق أو نتمشي قليلاً بين الشجر ثم نعود إلى الحظيرة مثلما غادرناها، ولكن هذه التفسيحات الجماعية ما كانت تختلف كثيراً عن أي طقس من الطقوس الأخرى، لا بتأديتها ولا بالغرض منها، وكانت لا تثيرني ولا تسليني.
تقدمني الأب برنابا بمسافة كبيرة وغاب عن ناظري عند أحد المنعطفات. كان يسير على عجل كأنه نسي أنني أرافقه، لا يعبأ بالدرب، المفروشة بالحصى وبالعيدان التي خلفتها العاصفة الليلية، ولا بالدغل الذي يغمر حافتيها ويتشبث بصايتي أو يغرز أشواكه فيها فيعوقني عن السير.
عند حنية قامت فيها سنديانة مترامية الفروع، توقف لحظة يستعيد أنفاسه. أسرعت الخطى لألحق به، وما أن رآني حتى هبط إلى الحنية وانحجب عن ناظري خلف الشجيرات القصيرة النامية تحت أطراف السنديانة. هل يريد أن يلقي في روعي أن أقلق عليه ,ابحث عنه؟ تطلعت إلى حيث هبط واختفى، فتراءى لي من خلال الأغصان سطح ترابي مخسوف من وسطه وحائط مبني بحجارة صغيرة ارتكزت عليه دعامات بارزة.
هل هي الصومعة التي طالما سمعنا باسمها؟ وهل تراه دلف إليها واختفى فيها؟ هذي أفنان القندول والوزال لا تزال تهتز وتوحي بأن إنسان عبر من هنا قبل قليل".
