اختلفت الروايات حول اسم أبيها، فمِن قائل إنه وهب اللات إلى قائل إنه عمرو بن الظرب، ولكن كثرة الروايات التي رجّحت اسم عمرو ابن الظرب جعلتنا نتبنى هذا الإسم.
وُلِدت زنوبيا، واسمها العربي زينب، في تدمر، ولما كانت أمها إغريقية تَمُتُ بصلة نَسَب إلى كيليوباترا ملكة مصر، لذا أرسلتها أمها إلى الإسكندرية لتتربى تربية ملوك، ولما عادت صبية إلى تدمر لفتت أنظار خيران الحاكم الروماني على تدمر آنئذ فاختارها زوجة لولده أوديناد (أذينة).
كانت زنوبيا مخطوطة لابن عمها الأسود فارس الصحراء فلما خطبها خيران وقع أبوها في حيرة، لكن مقتل الأسود أنقذه وزوّجها من أدينة، وكان يشاركها في الحكم ويستشيرها في الأمور الصعبة نظراً لحكمتها ورجاجة عقلها.
بعد معركة منتصرة ضد الفرس قُتِل أُذينة في ظروف غامضة، فتولت الحكم من بعده، وكان أول عمل لها هو أن تنظم جيشاً عربياً حريصاً على وطنه، ولما اطمأنت إلى ذلك طردت الرومان من تدمر بكل صلابة وشجاعة، وراحت تطرد فلولهم من بلاد الشام والجزيرة حتى وصلت في فتحها إلى ما وراء البوسفور.
ولما عظم شأنها خافت روما وجاء قيصرها على رأس جيش عظيم كسرها وأسرها، وقادها إلى روما، وهناك تزوجت من رئيس مجلس الشيوخ، وبعد وفاته صارت هي قصيرة روما على خلاف المصادر العربية التي جعلتها تموت في زنزانة منتحرة بالسم.
