عاشت زنوبيا, ملكة تدمر, في القرن الثالث الميلادي, وجسد مصيرها العجيب, وغير المألوف, التحولات والتغييرات التي اجتاحت العالم الروماني في الشرق. لقد كشفت حياة زنوبيا بجلاء بعض وجوه الحقائق التي لم يتمكن التاريخ من الإمساك بها, فعلاوة على الإعتبارات السياسية والتاريخية انضم تاريخ حقبة غنية لشرق البحر المتوسط, كانت شبه مجهولة, الى الرؤية الأصيلة للعالم الروماني الذي استعرب عبر زنوبيا. وهكذا نشأت في تدمر- اللوحة الدائرة للقوافل, ومركز تلاقي حضارات جميع الأقطار الغربية والشرقية- حضارة تجارية جديدة, ذات ثقافة رفيعة, وعلى جانب كبير جداً من الدقة والتهذيب واللباقة.. وذلك كله بفضل الشخصية المتميزة والفريدة لهذه الملكة الشابة, التي أيقظت الشعور القومي في جميع أقطار شرقي البحر المتوسط, وأدركت بفطنتها وذكائها أن الشرق أصبح مركز الثقل في السياسة العالمية من تلك الحقبة, وأنه سيبقى كذلك الى أمد بعيد. كانت زنوبيا إمرأة عمل مدهشة, ارتبط حلمها الكبير الذي تلاشى بسرعة مبكرة, باسم تدمر( فينيسيا الصحراء).
