"يُعني هذا البحث بظاهرة في التأليف المسرحي، هي إتخاذ التاريخ مصدراً؛ والمقصود بها إرتباط المسرحيات بالتاريخ، أيّاً كان شكل هذا الإرتباط، أو طبيعته، أو مستواه، كإعتماد المسرحية على شخصية من التاريخ، أو حدث، أو زمان، أو مكان، أو على ذلك كله، سواء أتقيدت بحقائق التاريخ كلها، أو بعضها، أم لم تتقيد.
واختيرت الظاهرة في سورية ومصر، لما بينهما من تشابه فيها، يبلغ أحياناً درجة التماثل، ولم تُميز في أحد القطرين عن الآخر، فكلاهما يعانيان مشكلات واحدة.
على الرغم مما يختص به كل قطر من ملامح تميزه، ولكنها لا تفصله عن أي قطر آخر من أقطار الوطن العربي، فهي كالملامح المختلفة في الأشقاء، تُمنح كل واحد ما يميزه، ولكنها لا تلغي إنتمائهم إلى أرومة واحدة.
واختيرت للبحث مرحلة، لتحديد زمانه، تمتد من عام 1945 إلى عام 1975م، وهي ذات عهود متعددة، مرت بها الظاهرة في أشكال مختلفة من التطور، وعالجت في أثنائها قضايا عدة.
"ولقد تم إنتقاء أمثلة من تسعة نصوص لثمانية مؤلفين من سورية، وأحد عشر نصاً، لعشرة مؤلفين من مصر، تتيح إمكان السبر والتحليل، وتتجنب الرصد السريع، والمسح الشامل، وروعي فيها إمكان تمثيلها معظم ما في الظاهرة من قضايا وأشكال وإتجاهات، وتناول البحث الظاهرة من جوانب ثلاثة: الموضوعات، والرؤية، والفن".
