أبو سعيد أسد بن موسى بن إبراهيم بن الوليد بن عبد الملك بن مروان الأموي القرشي، الملقب بـ أسد السنة، (132 هـ / 750م - 212 هـ / 827م) محدث من الثقات، عاش بمصر ومات بها، ولي جده إبراهيم بن الوليد الخلافة شهرين، وخلعه مروان بن محمد. ولد أسد بالبصرة، وقيل: بمصر سنة زالت سقوط الدولة الأموية 132 هـ، فنشأ، وطلب العلم ورحل، وجمع وصنَّف. عاش ثمانين سنة، من تصانيفه كتاب "الزهد".

يحتوي كتاب "الزهد" لأسد بن موسى على أكثر من مئة خبر، من مختلف درجات الحديث من صحيح وحسن وضعيف، بل موضوع ومختلف، وكلها تتطرق إلى موضوع واحد وهو الزهد. ولا شك أن النص الذي نتحدث عنه ما هو إلا قسم من أحد كتب أسد بن موسى، بل لعله فصل من كتاب، لاقتصاره كما قلنا على موضوع واحد.
ولأهمية هذا النص عني بإعادة طباعته محققاً ليتمكن الباحثين في التراث العربي الإسلامي من الوقوف على هذه النسخة صحيحة وكاملة. أما عمل المحقق فيها فيتجلى بـ: أولاً: أثبت كل الفروق والتعليقات المثبتة في نسخة "رئيف جورج خوري" بعد ترجمتها أو اختصارها، مع حذف لأغلب التعليقات التي قد يستغربها القارئ العربي. ثانياً: عني بضبط النص وتفصيله، وتصحيحه وبتخريج النصوص بالدلالة على أماكن وجودها.
