"نسكيات" كتاب خط سطوره آباء الكنيسة. وهم إذ يكتبون، يكتبون بإلهام الروح ولا يقدر أحد أن يفهمهم إلا بالإلهام نفسه. وللحصول على هذا الإلهام يجب أن تصلي أولاً ونطلب شفاعتهم محاولين الاقتداء بسيرتهم قدر المستطاع، لكي ينغرس في نفوسنا الشوق إلى فضائلهم. عندئذ يمكننا أن نقتلع الأهداء من نفوسنا وأن نبتعد عن كل ما يشوش أفكارنا من الأمور الدينوية الزائلة. فالآباء رجال علماء في الروح عرفوا الله لأنهم عاشوا معه وعاينوه ولمسوه. لهذا جاء تعبيرهم عن هذه الخبرة بلغة بسيطة ومحدودة جداً. وهذه اللغة، بالنسبة لذلك العالم الروحي اللامحسوس، تبقى مقصرة عن وصفه الوصف الكامل. لهذا فالأدب والفلسفة والعلم لا يمكنها أن تكشف الحقيقة المحبوبة وراء الكلمة إلا لذاك الذي اتحد بالله واستنار بنوره. إن التقليد الكنسي، والآباء ركيزة أساسية فيه، يشمل الكتاب المقدس، حسب مفهوم الكنيسة الشرقية وليس العكس، لأن الآباء هم الذين حددوا النصوص الكتابية وميزوها عن الكتب الأخرى غير الأصلية. لذلك أضحى الآباء المرجع الأساسي لفهم صحيح للكتاب المقدس. وفصل الكتاب من الآباء يقود المؤمن مباشرة إلى التفرد بالرأي، وبالتالي إلى فهمه بمقتضى أهدائه الشخصية. لذلك من يقرأ الآباء ويقتضي بهم، يتقدس ذهنه ويصبح تنكيره كتفكيرهم دون أن يفقد مقومات شخصيته وذاتيته، إنما على غرار "ليكن فيكم فكر المسيح". وإذا منحه الروح شيئاً جديداً لا يكون هذا الشيء مخالفاً لما هو عند الآباء، وإنما يكون منسجماً معه انسجاماً كلياً مهما كان جديداً، كتاب الآباء هذا تمت ترجمته إلى العربية وذاك كي يستفيد محبو الله من تعاليمه السماوية ويقتنوا لأنفسهم ذخائر روحية تساعدهم على التيارات العصرية المادية والفكرية الهدامة المنتشرة في أرجاء هذا العالم والرامية إلى تذليل الإنسان واستغلاله وتقييد حريته الغالية التي منحه إياها الله.
