إذا أردنا أن نصف مخطوطة كتاب الزهد للإمام أحمد بن حنبل في كلمة موجزة لقلنا: إنه صورة صادقة لحياة الإمام أحمد بن حنبل منذ مفتتح حياته إلى أن لقي ربه. فهو كتاب بعث فيه مشاعره، وبسط فيه نفسه، وسطر فيه مكنون فؤاده. وهو كتاب طبع أول مرة سنة 1357هـ. وقد تكلم الإمام أحمد رضي الله عنه في هذا الكتاب عن زهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في ثلاثين صفحة، ثم اتبع ذلك بكلام لطيف وأخبار صحاح عن زهد أنبياء الله ورسله: يونس وسليمان وأيوب وآدم ونوح وعيسى وموسى وداود وإبراهيم ويوسف. ثم أتبع ذلك بسرد لزهد الخلفاء الأربعة أبي بكر وعمر وعثمان وعلي ولزهد كبار الصحابة الأجلاء كأبي الدر داء وطلحة بن عبيد الله وأبي ذر وسلمان الفارسي وأبى هريرة والسيدة عائشة وحذيفة بن اليمان ومعاذ بن جبل وأبي عبيدة الجراح وعبد الله بن عباس وعبد الله بن عمر، وغيرهم. ثم أتبع ذلك بأخبار زهد كبار التابعين كالأصنف بن قيس وأويس القرني ومالك بن أنس وسعيد بن جبير وغيرهم.
والمخطوطة تقع في أربعمائة صفحة. فيها طرائف من الحكم وفرائد من المواعظ ورقائق من الشعر وزاد يفيد كل مسلم يحب أن يعيش مع سلطة الصالح في حقائق الحياة لا في زيفها.
