الزهد فى متاع زائل ودنيا فانية هو قارب النجاة الوحيد من خضم غرورها ولهوها.. هذا الذى أمر به الإسلام حين شرع لنا ما يتيح لنا الحياة بطريقة سليمة، وفى ذات الوقت حبب إلى قلوبنا الآخر وهى الدار الباقية. فكما أمرنا الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم أن نعمل فى دنيانا كأننا نعيش فيها أبدا، ذكرنا بعمل للآخرة كأننا نموت غدا. وهذه هى المعادلة الصعبة التى نعيش بها دنيانا فى ظل الإسلام.. فنكون فى الحياة بقلوب متعلقة بلقاء الرحمن ومتشوقة إلى الحياة الدائمة. وفى تاريخ الأنبياء والرسل والصحابة والتابعين نجد الكثير من الدروس والعبر والصور لحاية الزهد التى عاشها من كانوا يقدرون على حمل متاع الدنيا بين يديهم، وهى صور ترى قبساً منها فى هذا الكتاب الذى وضعه الإمام "أحمد بن محمد بن حنبل"، جمع فيه من زهد الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وسليمان ويوسف وموسى وعيسى ونوح وأيوب وبقية الأنبياء عليهم السلام.. إلى زهد الصديق والفاروق وذى النورين و غيرهم من الصحابة الكرام رضى الله عنهم وغير الصحابة رحمة الله عليهم.
