لا شك إن نظرة المجتمعات الغربية للأفكار الجديدة تختلف عن نظرة المجتمعات الشرقية لها، ويعود السبب في ذلك إلى إن التطور الحضاري للمجتمعات الغربية يختلف عن تطور المجتمعات الشرقية. حيث سلكت المجتمعات الغربية طريقاً يعتمد على فصل الدين عن الدولة واعتماد المادية العلمية (أي الإعتماد على المعطيات العلمية الملموسة) كأساس لبناء مجتمعاتها الحديثة. وقد انعكس هذا التطور في نظرة المجتمعات الغربية وفهمها للعقائد والأديان وبشكل يختلف كلياً عن نظرة المجتمعات الشرقية مما انعكس هذا في قبولهم لعقائد وأفكار جديدة. تنظر المجتمعات الغربية باحترام وقبولاً لإعتقادات الناس وعقائدهم وأديانهم بغض النظر عن نوع وشكل المعتقد، إذا كانت متأتية من السماء بواسطة الأنبياء والرسل، أو متأتية من أشخاص يطرحون أفكاراً وعقائد وأديان جديدة تجد لها تجاوباً. وهنا نجد أن نسبة ليست قليلة من الغربيين يعتنقون كل سنة أديان وعقائد مختلفة، فقسم أخذ يعتنق الإسلام وقسم يعتنق البوذية وقسم يعتنق أفكار هاري كرشنا وقسم اعتنق البهائية وهكذا. إن البهائية تعد هرطقة بنظر المسلمين ومن هنا تم محاربتها في أغلب العالم الإسلامي. بينما تجد لها انتشاراً في الغرب ليس بالقليل، وها هو البرفيسور أسلمنت ينظر إليها بأنها مدخل جديد لتوحيد الأديان في العالم.
