هذا هو شعر البهاء زهير وهو كما قلنا من الشعر الخفيف الأوزان، الرقيق اللطيف الوقع في القلوب والآذان، السهل الألفاظ سهولة لا نرى مثلها إلاّ عند أبي العتاهية، جعلت ابن خلكان ينعته بالسهل الممتنع، وهو، والحق يقال، السهل الذي يمتنع على كثير من الشعراء.
"تحقيق الديوان" وقد اعتمدنا في تحقيقه وتصحيحه على نسختين إحداهما طبعت في كمبريدج سنة 1876 حقّقها المستشرق أدورد هنري بلمر، ونقلها إلى الإنكليزية نظماً، وقد أشرنا إليها بحرف: أ. والثانية طبعت في بيروت، طبعتها المكتبة العموميّة، وقد أشرنا إليها بحرف: ب.
وأثبتنا في المتن ما رجحنا صحته من الروايات المختلفة الألفاظ أو المعاني، وذكرنا في الهامش الروايات الأخرى.
ووجدنا بعض مقاطع مروية في نسخة وناقصة في الأخرى فأثبتناها وأشرنا إليها، وعثرنا على بعض هفوات صرفيّة ونحويّة ولغويّة، وبعض خطإ في صفات القوافي فصححنا كل ذلك ولم نرَ من الضروري أن نشير إليه.
