يؤرخ هذا الكتاب لدولة الأدارسة التي قامت في المغرب سنة 172-223هـ/ 788-835م، وذلك عبر تمهيد وأربعة فصول، تضمن التمهيد دراسة جغرافية وديموغرافية للمغرب الأقصى، وبحث الفصل الأول في الصراع الداخلي للهاشميين الذين قسمهم إلى علويين وعباسيين، وكذلك ثورات العلويين 145هـ و169هـ، التي لم يكتب لها النجاح، وبحث الفصل الثاني بنتائج الثورة الأخيرة وكيف أدت إلى تأسيس دولة للعلويين في المغرب الأقصى على يد أحد أقطابهم إدريس بن عبد الله الذي نجا من مجزرة 169هـ وبين الطريق التي سلكها من الحجاز إلى المغرب يرافقه خادمه البربري الأصل راشد وكيف نزل وليلي قاعدة جبل زرهون والتف البربر حوله فبايعوه وساعدوه على تأسيس دولة ناهضت بني العباس في أوج مجهدهم، واثبت انقياد المسلمين البربر وإطاعتهم لآل بيت النبي أكثر من العرب الذين كان النبي منهم-وانتهى هذا الفصل مع نهاية إدريس الأول مؤسس الدولة.
وتتبع في الفصل الثالث المخاض العسير الذي مرت به الدولة ونظرت في وفاة إدريس الأول دون وريث وكيف قيض الله لها المولى راشداً الذي تولى إدارتها بحزم وعزم حتى تمت ولادة إدريس الثاني فبدأت مرحلة الوصاية التي انتهت بمبايعة إدريس الثاني. ثم بحث في تولي الإمام إدريس الثاني دولة موطدة الدعائم الأمر الذي شجع العرب على الوفود إلى المغرب للمساهمة في نهضتها وكيف أخذت الدولة بعدها الحضاري.
وتناول الفصل الرابع عبقرية العلويين الأدارسة في تنظيم الدولة مبيناً كيف كانوا رجال حكم من الطراز الأول وكيف منحوا المغرب مكانة دولية لم يعرفها خلال تاريخه القديم، فأضحى في ظلال حكمهم يتمتع بكيان دولي لأول مرة في تاريخه مع تحديد هويته السياسية والدينية-كما أضحى عربي الانتماء واللسان مسلم العقيدة وكيف أدخلوا إليه نظم الحكم الخلافية فعرف الوزارة والقضاة والكتابة.
