يعد ظهور الإسلام من أهم العوامل التي أدت إلى نشأة الفلسفة الإسلامية فكان بمثابة ثورة روحية غيّرت أحوال العرب وأدت إلى بعث فكري جديد تجلى في علوم عدة من تفسير وحديث وفقه وأصول فقه وغير ذلك من علوم كان يُستخدم فيها النظر العقلي، فالقرآن الكريم يدعو إلى تقديس العقل وإعماله في كل ما يدور حولنا، فالقرآن الكريم اشتمل على المبادىء الفلسفية، ومن هذه المبادىء الإيمان بالتوحيد، وأن الله خالق قديم، وكل ما يتصل بالبحث بالذات والصفات وغير ذلك من مبادىء تدخل في إطار البحث الفلسفي.
في هذا الكتاب، تتحدث المؤلفة عن نشأة الفلسفة الإسلامية وأعلامها وحركة الترجمة في عصور مختلفة من تاريخ الإسلام وما أسهم به فلاسفة المسلمين في هذا المجال، وتقدم نخبة من فلاسفة العرب المسلمين، ومنهم فلاسفة المشرق العربي، (الكندي والفارابي وإبن سينا)، ومنهم أيضاً فلاسفة المغرب العربي (إبن باجة وإبن طفيل وإبن رشد)، ويبقى السؤال الذي تطرحه المؤلفة: إذا كانت هناك تلك النسبة التي شطرت الفلسفة الإسلامية إلى شطرين فهل هناك ما يميّز منهما عن الآخر أو بمعنى آخر هل هناك ميزة يتميز بها فلاسفة المشرق لا نجدها عند فلاسفة المغرب والعكس أيضاً؟
والجواب يأتي بعد الكشف عن ميزة كل فيلسوف وماذا قدم، ولماذا اختلف عن غيره، فالكندي قال "أن العالم حادث من لا شيء!" ، والفارابي قدم نظرية "الفيض وأن "الموجود الأول هو السبب الأول لوجود سائر الموجودات". وإبن سينا تحدث عن "قدم العالم أو حدوثه"، وإبن مسكويه اهتم بالأخلاق والسعادة، وإبن باجة ركز على النفس ومراتب المعرفة المختلفة، وإبن طفيل اهتم بالتأمل والنزعة النقدية وقدم "حي بن يقظان"، أما إبن رشد فشرح فلسفة أرسطو وركّز على الإنسان والحرية والضرورة الإنسانية والإلهية.
