شخصية أبي حامد الغزالي "حجة الإسلام" شخصية مثيرة مليئة بعالم المعنى العميق، واستشراف ما وراء الظاهر، وقد مرت حياته بأكثر من مرحلة، وكانت هذه الشخصية بكل غناها مثيرة للدرس الديني والفلسفي والسياسي في ضوء التسليم بتناقضاتها وتنوعها، حيث نجده يقبل الفلسفة ويهاجمها في الوقت ذاته، يمارس الكلام ويتبرأ منه، يشغل منصبا رسميا ويدين الفقهاء، يدافع عن نظام سياسي، ويكشف بكيفية ضمنية عن فشله الأخلاقي والسياسي.
هذا الكتاب دراسة جديدة وبحث علمي مثير للجدل غير تلك الدراسات التي لم تصل إلى تفسير مقنع لهذا التنوع والتناقض.
فالكتابات التقليدية ظلت بعيدة كل البعد عن اعتبار الواقع السياسي في تفسير مسار الفكر الإسلامي، إذ تناولت مضامين هذا الفكر مجردة عن واقعها السوسيو ثقافي والسياسي، ولم تر فيه إلا جوانبه الإيجابية.
أما الكتابات التي أعطت أهمية لهذا الجانب – خاصة الماركسية منها – فقد كانت نتائجها تسبق تحليلاتها، فلم تكن تقرأ النصوص بل تقرأ حاضرها المثقل بالهموم، وكانت تعيد تشكيل مضامين هذا الفكر التراثي بما يخدم أهدافها الأيديولوجية الفوقية.
هذا الكتاب يتجاوز هذا وذاك، ويدرس شخصية الغزالي في موضوعية، ناظرا إلى الجدل بين الديني والسياسي داخله، منقبا عن دوافعه الإنسانية المجردة قبل تحوله الديني ورصد مساراتها، بعد تحوله الديني العميق دون أن يرفع الغزالي في علاقته بالسياسة إلى مصاف الملائكة، ودون أن يحمل نصوصه ومواقفه ما لا تحتمل.
