يدور موضوع الكتاب حول القدرة العرفانية لدى كل من الرجل والمرأة، وأيهما يمتلك إمكانية السير والسلوك إلى الله أكثر، وهل هناك فروقات بينهما ولما؟ يرى آية الله جوادي الآملي في هذا الكتاب أن المرأة كذات لا تختلف عن الرجل، ولا يختلف الرجل عنها، ولذلك أفسح بالمجال لكل منهما للوصول إلى "مقام الخلافة الإلهية"، ولم يكن هذا المقام خاصاً بالرجل، وإنما كان خاصاً بالإنسان، وكما أن الرجل إنسان فالمرأة إنسان ولا يقل أحدهما في مقام الإنسانية عن الآخر...".
فما هي نظرة العرفانين إلى المرأة هل هي سلبية أم إيجابية، وما هو سبيل "العروج" إلى الله، هل هو عن طريق القلب، أم العقل، أم أن كلاً من العقل والقلب له مساهمته في رفد هذا السير، هل حقاً تمتلك المرأة امكانية العروج بدرجة لا تقل عن الرجل، هل أثبتت التجربة وصول نساء إلى هذه المرتبة. جميع هذه التساؤلات يجيب عنها "الآملي" مستنداً إلى ركائز من القرآن الكريم، وأحاديث لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وآل بيته، فضلاً عن علماء دين من مذاهب مختلفة ليخلص إلى نتيجة أن الأنوثة والذكورة تمتلك في داخلهما الفاعلية الروحية ذاتهما فالروح لا تصنف بالذكورة أو الأنوثة، وأن البدن مجرد مركب تشق فيه الروح عباب بحر الحياة، وبهذا تصبح المرأة في رأيه مؤهلة لهذا المرتبة السامية من العرفان.
