يعتبر الآغا محمد البيد آبادي، موضوع البحث في هذا الكتاب، رائد مدرسة العرفان الحديثة. ولِد هذا الفقيه العارف في عائلة علمانية، فوالده الملا محمد رفيع الكيلاني. كان من علماء كيلان وفضائلها ومن أهل الورع والاجتهاد، هاجر من كيلان على أصفهان عاصمة الدولة الصفوية آنذاك التي كانت تحتضن أكبر الحوزات العلمية ويتواجد فيها أعداد غفيرة من العلماء والمدارس الدينية، وبقي فيها إلى أن توفي ودفن في مقبرة تخت فولاد، وعاش البيد آبادي في أصفهان إلى أن توفي فيها ودفن قرب والده. تربى العارف البيد آبادي في أصفهان مثل هذا الأب وفي الأجواء الدينية والعلمية في حوزة أصفهان بحضوره عند أكابر علمائها وحكمائها وعرفائها، وتلقى التربية الروحية والأخلاقية عند السيد القطب الدين النيرزي الشرازي المتوفى سنة 1173هـ الذي انتهت إليه قطبية الطريقة الذهبية. وكان للعارف البيد آبادي هي بعدها حوزات دراسية متعددة في الأصول والفقه والفلسفة والعرفان والتفسير، وكان له تأثير عليها في مسألة تزكية الباطن، وتهذيب الأخلاق على طلابه واستطاع أن يدفعهم إلى درجات راقية في العلم والعمل فاستقطب بذلك أبرز العلماء والفضلاء إلى مجلس درسه.
وفي هذا الكتاب يتابع المؤلف مسيرة الآغا محمد البيد آبادي العلمية والمعرفية، متتبعاً ما كتب عنه ومترجماً جميع آثاره المطبوعة والغاية إعطاء هذا العالم حقه حيث لم يكتب عنه إلا الشيء النذير، وتعريف هذا الجيل بعالم مثّل دور الريادة في مدرسة العرفان وذلك من خلال منهجه وطرقه في التزكية والتربية الروحية والتهذيب الأخلاقي.
