إن هذا "المعجم" يندرج في "المعجمات" الحديثة، فأنت تقف فيه على الكلمة الجديدة والمصطلح الجديد في العلوم الإنسانية وشتى آخر في العلوم التطبيقية؛ إن لأسماء المستحدثات والأجهزة الجديدة، وأسماء الأطعمة والأشربة وأسماء المعادن والمواد المنزلية حضوراً فيه، وأنت مثلاً تجد البنسلين والكنين والأنسولين وغير ذلك "مداخل" في هذا المعجم.
ثم إن "المعجم" لا يحفل بمادة الخطأ والصواب ومسألة التصحيح، فالكثير مما لم نجد له وجهاً في فصيح العربية مثبت في "المعجم" على أنه عربية معاصرة معروفة، وهذا لا يعني أن "المعجم" قد خلص للجديد دون غيره فأنت تجد طائفة كبيرة من الكلم القديم.
و"المعجم" يكثر في شواهده من لغة التنزيل، ويكاد يخلو في شواهده من لغة الحديث الشريف، في حين يأتي بالكثير مما هو شائع في الصحف والمجلات الحديثة.
هذه مباحث معجمية تتصل بالمعجم القديم في العربية وتطور الدلالة فيه على تراخي العصور. على أنها لا تبتئس مما ألم بالكلمة العربية في عصرنا. وهي في جملتها تتصل بتاريخ متصل الحلقات للعربية، وإني إذ أكتب هذه الأسطر، لا أريد منها أن تعرف بمادة هذا "المجموع"، ولكني أدفع القارئ إلى الوقوف عليها لينظر في ماضي العربية وحاضرها.
