هذا المعجم هو مرجع لازم لكل باحث ومحقق ومترجم وطالب وذلك لاحتوائه على رصد لجميع المعاجم العربية العامة والمتخصصة، والمقصود بالمعاجم العربية ما كانت لغتها كلها العربية، أو كانت لغتها أجنبية وتعتبر اللغة العربية جزءاً من تغطيتها، ويقتصر هذا المعجم على المعاجم المطبوعة فقط، فيترك المخطوط كما يترك المعاجم التي نشرت في الدوريات وكذلك التي ألحقت بنهايات الكتب. كما لا يتقيد بتاريخ أو مكان نشر إذ يحوي أول معجم عربي طبع عام 1505، وآخر طبع أوائل عام 1993.
إلى جانب هذا يحاول رصد جميع الطبعات الصادرة للمعجم المتعدد الطبعات الصادرة للمعجم المتعدد الطبعات، مع محاولة منه لإبراز الخصائص المميزة لكل طبعة، إن كان ثمة ما يميزها. وبالعودة لأقسام هذا المعجم نجد أنه يقع في ثلاثة أقسام الأول: المعجمات العربية العامة الحادية اللغة (عربي-عربي) وهذه قسمت إلى مجموعات تتصدرها مجموعة معاجم مفردات اللغة، يليها معاجم الأضداد فالمترادفات، فمعاجم الألفاظ العامية والدخيلة واللهجات والصواب اللغوي.
وأخيراً معاجم المعاني الثاني-المعجمات العربية العامة الثنائية والثلاثية والمتعددة اللغات (عربي-أجنبي، أجنبي-عربي) وجمعت في هذا الباب اللغات الأجنبية ورتب هجائياً بحيث تندرج تحت كل لغة معاجمها موزعة على ثلاثة فروع: المعاجم العربية المشروحة بهذه اللغة الأجنبية، معاجم هذه اللغة الأجنبية المشروحة بالعربية، معاجم اللهجات، الثالث: المعجمات العربية الموضوعية أو المتخصصة، ورتب هذا الباب هجائياً وفق رؤوس الموضوعات الدالة على العلوم ومجالات المعرفة المتخصصة التي يغطيها وينتظم مداخل المعاجم تحت كل رأس سياق هجائي بأسماء مؤلفيها.
