يحاول المؤلف من خلال كتابه هذا التعريف بالمعجمات العربية، حيث يقدم للقارئ جميع المعجمات التي نشأت من بدء تدوينها حتى يومنا هذا، في مختلف مجالات اللغة التي شملها تراثنا العربي وذلك لكي يتعود الباحث على التنقيب في هذا التراث والاستفادة من ناحية، وليصبح أكثر قدرة على بحثه وتصنيفه وتطويره، حسب القواعد المعجمية من ناحية أخرى. ويفهم من عنوان الموضوع الذي هو مدار البحث، أن عناية المؤلف منصبة على المعاجم المكتوبة، ذلك لأن للعناية بالكلمات المسموعة مجالاً آخر غير المجال الذي تتعرض له هذه الدراسة، وقد ترتب على ذلك ان المؤلف في هذه الدراسة لم يبحث عن الكلمة المسموعة في العصر الجاهلي، بسبب محدودية القراءة والكتابة إلى أقصى حد.
