هذا شرح موضوعي للخطبة الشريفة المعروفة "بالشقشقية" التي جرت على لسان سيد البلغاء وأمير البيان أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام، وفي الشرح تم اتباع طريقة تتناسب مع الفرض المنشود والذي يتلخص في أمرين: الأول النظر في أهلية الأشخاص الذين سبقوا أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام لتولي الخلافة وذلك بمناقشة الأدلة المعتمدة عندهم على صحة خلافتهم خصوصاً ما تمسك به الخليفة الثاني وغيره من السقيفة من أمور جعلها مرجحات لجانب أبي بكر على سواه ممن كان حاضراً آنذاك. الثاني إثبات وجود النص من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم على خلافة أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبى طالب عليه السلام، وإبطال ما فعليه القوم من عدم وجود هكذا نص، ولذا كانت هناك عدة مناقشات مع الشارح المعتزلي وغيره في هذا الاتجاه.
وبالرجوع لتقسيمات الكتاب نجد أنه قد جاء محتوياً على أربعة فصول وخاتمة: الفصل الأول جاء في خلافة أبي بكر بن أبي قحافة، الفصل الثاني تناول خلافة عمر بن الخطاب، أما الفصل الثالث: فتوقف عند خلافة عثمان بن عفان، وخصص الفصل الرابع لخلافة أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام، أما الخاتمة فجاءت محتوية على كلام حول الخلافة.
