إن أصل علم الحديث في الإسلام هو أقواله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأفعاله، ونومه، ويقظته، وحركاته، وسكوته، وقيامه، وجوده، واجتهاده، وعبادته، وسيرته، وسراياه ومغازيه، وجدَه وخطبه، وكتبه، وعهوده، ومواثيقه، وكل ما رويَ عنه عليه الصلاة والسلام كما يقول الحاكم النيسابوري في كتابه "المدخل إلى الحديث".
وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع الشيخ اسماعيل حريري "40 حديثاً في خير النبيين" معزوة للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، بالسند المتصل، فيما ورد عن النبي وما دونه أصحابه عنه تبين خصال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وقراءته وكتابته قبل البعثة وبعدها، وفي بيان ما ثبت له صلى الله عليه وسلم من ولاية، وعلم، وعبادات، وأسرار، "ما أعطي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأهل بيته عليهم السلام من الإسم الأعظم" وأخلاقه في الحرب والسلم وغير ذلك كثير.
ومن تلك الأحاديث تقتبس ما جاء (في علم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم) مما أورده الكاتب: بالسند المتصل إلى الثقة محمد بن الحسن الصفار قال: حدثنا العباس بن معروف عن حماد بن عيسى عن حريز عن أبي بصير عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: وسئل علي عليه السلام عن علم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: علم النبي علم جميع النبيين، وعلم ما كان وعلم ما هو كائن إلى قيام الساعة".
