إن الدلالة لا تسلم نفسها اعتماداً على لغة القصيدة وحدها، وما يتركب فيها من عناصر البناء الفني، بل تحتاج إلى (التأويل) الذي يمَكـِّن من استنتاجها على وفق إمكانات القارئ/ المؤول، وقدرته على النفاذ إلى أعماق النص الشعري.
ومهمة النقد أن ينظر في عناصر البناء ليرى كيف يسهم كل عنصر فني في إنتاج هذه الدلالة، أو الإيحاء بها، أو بجزءٍ منها منطلقـاً من كون القصيدة بناءً فنيّاً ينطوي على دلالته.
من هذا الفهم تنطلق هذه الدراسة النقدية لإلغاء حواجز مصطنعة بين مناهج (سياقيَّة)، وأخرى (بنائيَّة) للإمساك بدلالات الوطن في شعر السيّاب سواء ما يطفو منها على سطح اللغة، أو ما يتخفَّى في بنيتها العميقة.
