هذه المقتطفات من كتاب الأذكياء، ألَّفه الحافظ أبو الفرج ابن الجوزي (597)، المولود بمدينة بغداد في درب الحبيب، وقد اشتهر بإتقانه علوماً شتى؛ كالتفسير، والفقه، والتاريخ، والطب، غير أنَّ يده الطولى كانت في الوعظ والتذكير.
أما كتاب الأذكياء فقد جمع فيه ابن الجوزي نوادر الأذكياء وطرائف أخبارهم، وردَّ الذكاء إلى موهبة العقل، وكان هدفه من الكتاب أن يُعرِّف بأقدار من أخبر عنهم بذكر أحوالهم، وأن يَذْكر تلك الأخبار، فلعلَّ القارئ إن اطَّلع عليها أن يُحصِّل بعضاً من ذكائهم، فالذكاء لديه موهبة وتَعَلُّم.
ويُعرِّف ابن الجوزي الذكاء - ناقلاً عن غيره - فيقول: إنه "سرعة الفهم وحِدَّته"، وهو عكس البلادة، ويورد معناه اللغوي الدال على تمام الشيء وسرعته.
وقد بنى ابن الجوزي كتابه على ثلاثة وثلاثين باباً؛ منها: فضل العقل وماهيته ومحله، والذهن والفهم والذكاء، وعلامات الذكاء، والمنقول من فطنة الأنبياء، وصحابة النبي الكريم، والوزراء، والقضاة، وعلماء العربية... إلخ.
