درج الجغرافيون في دراستهم الإقليمية للعالم على تقسيمه إلى أقسام أبسطها القارات، ولكن باستمرار التفاوت بين البيئات وظهور الفوارق العميقة في التركيب السياسي والبناء الاقتصادية أو سياسية أو ديموغرافية، ودراسة كل منها دراسة مستقلة حتى في داخل القارة الواحدة وفي إطار قواسم مشتركة أبرزها مظاهر التقدم أو التخلف. ومن هنا سادت فكرة الأقاليم الحضارية الثمانية الكبرى التي ينقسم إليها العالم وهي أوروبا وأمريكا الشمالية وأمريكا اللاتينية والاتحاد السوفيتي والشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا المدارية وآسيا الموسمية والأوقيانوسية.
وهذا الكتاب محاولة لدراسة أقاليم العالم الكبرى آثرت أن يقتصر على أربعة منها. وتشغل هذه الأقاليم الأربعة نحو نصف مساحة اليابس ويعيش بها نحو ثلث سكان العالم، وتمثل ثلاثة من هذه الأقاليم-العالم المتقدم وهي أوروبا والاتحاد السوفيتي وأمريكا الشمالية، وإقليم واحد يمثل العالم النامي وهو أفريقيا المدارية على أمل أن ندرس باقي الأقاليم في كتاب آخر في المستقبل بإذن الله.
ويقع هذا الكتاب في خمسة أبواب يتناول الأول منها مفهوم الجغرافيا الإقليمية وأنواع الأقاليم، ثم يتناول كل باب من الأبواب التالية إقليمياً من الأقاليم الأربعة الكبرى التي سبق ذكرها، وبديهي أن كتاباً كهذا لا يجيب على كل الأسئلة عن الأقاليم التي درسها بل يمثل محاولة لإبراز ملامح شخصية هذه الأقاليم، ومن هنا يمكن أن يفيد كمرجع عام لطلاب الدراسات الجغرافية في الصفوف الأولى من المرحلة الجامعية.
