تتباين مناطق وأقاليم العالم تباينا كبيرا عن بعضها البعض في سمات الموقع وخصائص الظروف الطبيعية والملامح البشرية وبالتالي تختلف في وزنها وأهميتها على مستوى العالم ، وتؤلف الظروف الطبيعية والملامح البشرية لأقاليم العالم ميدان علم الجغرافيا ومحور اهتمامه منذ ظهوره كعلم بين العلوم الانسانية في بلاد اليونان القديمة، ويمثل تبلور الفكر الجغرافي نتيجة موضوعية ومتوقعة لإجتهاد الانسان وفضوله المستمر لمعرفة إمكانيات بيئته المحلية وأبعاد وخصائص البيئات الأخرى سواء القريبة أو البعيدة على حد سواء والتي تحققت عن طريق الترحان في البداية ثم الكشوف في مرحلة تالية، لذا يعد الفكر الجغرافي أسبق زمنيا من الجغرافيا كعلم. ومع تزايد معرفة الإنسان بالبيئات وبالأقاليم المختلفة في العالم بدأت تظهر المتغيرات أو الاختلافات المكانية لذا تطورت الاجتهادات الرامية إلى تفسيرها مما أثرى الفكر الجغرافي وعمق الدراسة الجغرافية التى تهدف في النهاية إلى حسن فهم الإنسان للعالم الذي يعيش فيه ومعنى ذلك وجود ارتباط وثيق بين الكشوف الجغرافية وتطور الفكر الجغرافي خلال العصور التاريخية المختلفة وهو ما يشكل محور الدراسة.
