وضع الإمام أبو الحسن علي بن إسماعيل الأشعري كتابه هذا لمن يرغب في معرفة المذاهب والمقالات إذ كما يقول إنه رأى الناس في رواية ما يحكون من ذكر المقالات إما مقصر فيما يحكيه، وغالط فيما يذكره من قول مخالفيه وبين معتمد للكذب في الحكاية أو تارك للتقصي في روايته لما يرويه. وقد أراد المؤلف أن يشرح ما يتعلق بأمر المقالات فاختصر ما اختصر وترك الإطالة والإكثار تعميماً للفائدة.
وهذا الكتاب يعد من أقدم الكتب التي تناولت هذه المواضيع كما أنه أصحها وأقلها تحيزاً لمذهب دون آخر وقد كان من يريد الإطلاع على أحوال هذه الفرق يلجأ إلى كتب من سبقه، كالملل والنحل. وقد أجمع المؤرخون على أن كتاب الأشعري من أجمع الكتب في مجاله. كما نقل منه من جاء بعده من المؤلفين إلا أن ظروفاً حالت دون انتشار الكتاب في العالم الإسلامي منها أنه لم يجر ترتيبه بشكل يسهل على الدارسين مهمتهم إذا جاء ترتيبه في قسمين الأول في الجليل من الكلام والثاني في الدقيق فيه.
قد اعتمد المحقق في ضبطه لمتن الكتاب أربع نسخ أصيلة قابلي بعضها ببعض، حتى توصل إلى النسخة الأصح وهي الجودة في حيدر آباد، كتبت في القرن السادس من الهجرة، وهي تحوي الجزء الأول من مقالات الإسلاميين واختلاف المصلين. وقد عمد المؤلف إلى إكمال النواقص في المخطوطة وتصحيح الأغلاط وتنقيط الحروف إذ كانت أكثر النسخ قليلة الإعجام. كما ذيل الكتاب بفهرس لأسماء الرجال وذكر مآخذ تراجمتهم.
