قليل هو ما كتب عن تاريخ الخليج العربي أو الدول المتاخمة له بالمقارنة مع معظم الدول الأخرى في الشرق الأوسط. فأغلب ما كتب عنه يتناول الفترة التي تلت الحرب العالمية الأولى، ويركز على المسائل المتعلقة باستغلال موارد البترول في المنطقة.

وعلى الرغم من أن منطقة الخليج العربي منطقة متجانسة فيما يتعلق بعدد من المناحي، إلا أنها مشكلة من دويلات عدة مميزة عن بعضها بوضوح، ولكل منها تاريخ وثقافة خاصان ومتفردان. ويركز هذا الكتاب على واحدة من تلك الدويلات – دولة عمان – ويحاول أن يحلل الأحداث والإتجاهات التي جرت في هذه الإمارة خلال تلك فترة عام 1862 الحاسمة التي عصفت بها تغييرات تتجاوز السيطرة بمجتمعها القبلي القديم الذي اعتمد على الملاحة، كما يحاول فهم طبيعة سكانها الأصليين حيث قدم المؤلف دليلا للأسباب التي أدت إلى وقوع الأحداث في الفترة التاريخية بين عامي 1862و1903، عندما خطت عمان خطواتها الأولى التي كفلت لها الوصول إلى وقائعها الإقتصادية والدولية والسياسية الداخلية الجديدة، إلا أن الفصل الأخير أفرده لتاريخ عمان في القرن العشرين حتى أوائل الستينيات من القرن نفسه. ومن المثير للإهتمام أن القرن من الزمان المحصور خلال الفترة (1862-1962) يشكل مرحلة تاريخية متفردة؛ لأنه في عام 1963، كانت هناك إكتشافات بترولية عظيمة في عمان، وبدأ بزوغ نجم عصر جديد في تاريخها.
