صوّرت الرواية حياة عائلة راغد المعرّاوي وزوجته حسيبة اللاذقاني، وأبنائه عمران وربيع وباهرة، وكنّته كافي زوجة عمران وحفيده حيّان، وهي تعيش في قرية افتراضية تدعى «تلّ الورد» حياة مطمئنة هادئة، ما لبثت أن اضطربت لتتشظى العائلة ويلقى أفرادها مصائر متقاطعة تشبه مصائر الشخصيات في الملاحم القديمة. وقد مهّدت الكاتبة في الفصل الأول، جنّة الورد لطبيعة الحياة التي كان يعيشها الناس في تل الورد، البلاد التي تشبه الجنة بأشجارها وورودها وعلاقات المحبة والتآخي والتعاون بين أهلها، لكنها كشفت من جانب آخر عن وجود بؤر عميقة كامنة، سرعان ما ستنفجر وتشتعل مثل النار في الهشيم، ليتحول السكون والهدوء والوداعة التي كانت تحياها تل الورد وأهاليها إلى اضطرابات وفوضى عارمة بدأت سلمية، ثم ما لبثت أن تحولت إلى عنف غير مسبوق، بعد أن سفكت الدماء، فعمّت الفوضى، وتشتت الأسر بين مؤيد ومعارض لما يحدث، ولم تنج عائلة المعراوي من هذا الصراع، فقد وجد المعـــراوي ابنيه على طرفي نقيض الأول ربيع الذي دُفع للانشـــقاق عن المخفر الذي كان يعمل فيه بعد تعرضه للاعتقال والتعذيب، لأنه رفض إطلاق النار على أبناء قريته، ومضى ليصنف على أنه إرهابي، والثاني عمران الذي لم يكن يرغب في أن يكون طرفا في هذا النزاع، لكنه وجد نفسه في الطرف النقيض لأخيه، وأمام هذا المأزق ما كان من المعراوي وزوجته حسيبة بتشجيع عمران وعائلته الصغيرة إلا النزوح، فالوالدان لا يرغبان برؤية أحد أبنائهما يقتل الآخر.
