يشكل القهر السمة الغالبة على العلاقات الإجتماعية في قصص محمود زيادة "الطريق إلى تل الورد" ويتخذ أشكالاً كثيرة تختلف باختلاف طرفي العلاقة، لا سيما العلاقة بين المواطن بنسخته العربية، والنظام السياسي بنسخته اللبنانية (الطائفية – الإستزلامية – الطبقية)، ولا من رابط يجمع بين الإثنين، وهو ما رصده الروائي في شبكة متنوعة من علاقات القوة والضعف بين شخصياته، القوي يُخضع الضعيف، والضعيف ما عليه إلا أن يخضع أو يهاجر، أو يقبع في الظلمة. عندما سُئل الروائي هل شخصيات الأقاصيص في كتابه تمثله، أجاب "كتابي ليس سيرة ذاتية، لكنني أعتقد أن كل كتابة تعبر عن كاتبها ولو حاول إخفاء ذلك ... وكل عمل فني هو على علاقة مباشرة بالحالات النفسية اللاواعية وبتاريخ حياة الفرد من طفولته إلى العمر كله". وختم بالقول: "إن في هذه القصص خيالات تعبر عن هواجس وأحلام وحقائق إجتماعية وسياسية، وهي تطابق الواقع تماماً، وأحياناً يغلب عليها الخيال. باختصار، هذا الكتاب هو مزيج من حقائق واقعية قد وقعت، ومن خيالات، وربما تكون خيالاتي أكثر تعبيراً عما تعرفونه عني".
في القصة التي يفتتح بها الروائي عمله "أستاذ اللغة العربية" يسلط الضوء على واقع العمل في لبنان وبخاصة في قطاع التعليم، والأجور المتدنية التي اضطر معها "أديب" بطل القصة أن يعمل سنكرياً كعمل إضافي كي يعيش، تاركاً عشقه للأدب والشعر على مضض. وهنا يثور السؤال عن ماهية دور المعنيين في الشأن العام للحفاظ على هذه المهنة المقدسة؟. قضايا كُثر يعالجها الروائي في هذه المجموعة القصصية تشكل مجتمعة وثيقة نقدية تعكس اهتمامات الأدب الروائي وحركة الرواية العربية في أسئلتها وهواجسها الراهنة خلال الآونة الأخيرة.
