لا شك أن شخصية الإمام علي رضي الله عنه هي ذات خصائص اصيلة جعلت جمع من علماء ومثقفين وفقهاء مسلمين، على اختلاف مشاربهم ومذاهبهم واتجاهاتهم العقائدية يتهافتون إلى الكتابة عنها، وقد وجد علماء وكتَاب المسلمين خزيناً هائلاً من الدروس والعبر في سيرة هذه الشخصية الإسلامية العملاقة، ووقفوا على حصيلة ثرية من التعاليم والمبادئ والقيم السامية التي تدعو إلى التمسك بالتوحيد، ونبذ كلَ صور الشرك والانحراف، والدعوة إلى وحدة الكلمة والتعاون على أساس القرآن والحقَ الذي دعا إليه بني الرحمة (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، ورفض كلَ أشكال الفرقة والتنافر والاختلاف بين أبناء هذه الأمة.
وهذا الكتاب يمثل هذا الإتجاه العارم الصادر من بعض الكتَاب، والذي يجري في هذا الطريق، ويشير إلى أمرين:
الأول: مدى صلة الأمة بشخصياتها الفذَة، وعلى رأسها ابن عم الرسول (صلى الله عليه وسلم) وصهره وباب علمه الإمام علي (رضي الله عنه). فهو يشارك هذا الطيف العام على صعيد رواية فضائل ومناقب هذه الشخصية المشرقة، وينقل بعضاً من مواقفها العظيمة التي سجَلتها أقلام ومصادر مختلفة من الشيعة والسنَة على السواء.
والثاني: وجود مساحة مشتركة عريضة وواسعة من المدرستين: الشيعية والسنيَة على صعيد رواية الأحاديث المشتركة بينهما حول شخصية الإمام علي (رضي الله عنه).
فالكتاب يعتمد على مصادر ومراجع سنَية بنفس القدر الذي يعتمد فيه على كل المصادر والكتب الشيعيَة، وأظهر روايات مشتركة نقلتها كتب المدرستين معاً، ليثبت للقارئ المسلم أن ثمة مواضع مشتركة موجودة في غير مجال الفقه والأصول، والأخلاق والتربية. وإذ بالمشتركات أكبر مما يظنَها البعض.
هذا، وقد توزع الكتاب إلى ستة فصول تشكل سيرة حياة الإمام وهي: ولادته ونشأته (رضي الله عنه)، زواجه من فاطمة، شمائله وخصائصه، فضائله ومناقبه، حياته السياسية والاجتماعية، وأخيراً، قبسات من حكمه (رضي الله عنه).
