صاحب هذا الديوان الذي نقلب صفحاته هو شاعر عذري أحب حباً عفيفاً طاهراً، فحالت العادات القبلية دون زواجه بمن أحب، فترك لنا شعراً هو نبض قلب عاشق أحب حتى الجنون، فاستحق عن جدارة لقب "مجنون ليلى". فخلد شعره قصته وخلد اسم حبيبته ليلى، وأصبح مرادفاً لكل حبيبته حتى قيل: "كل يغني على ليلاه".
ويحوي هذا الديوان قصائد فيها أرق وأجمل ما قيل في الحب والعشق والغرام. أتت هذه القصائد مضبوطة بالشكل اضافة الى شرح مفرداتها مع الوقوف على شخصية مجنون ليلى للتعرف عليها.
يكتفي شعر مجنون ليلى قيس بن الملوح بشرح الأشواق وشكوى الفراق، من غير أن يتطرف بوصف محاسن الحبيب وملذات اللقاء. وهو شعر يتصف بالبساطة والصدق اللذين يتجليان في المعاني القريبة المأخذ. فنحن مع مجنون ليلى إزاء وجدان يسيل ألماً ويأساً، قسا عليه الوشاة والأصحاب والأهل فلم يبق أمامه سوى اليأس والبكاء والشرود عن الناس.
وقد أثبتت في هذا الديوان الأبيات الموثوق بنسبتها إلى قيس بن الملوح، وأسقطت الأبيات التي يشك في نسبتها إليه.
