هذه القراءة للأشعار والأخبار المنسوبة لمجنون بني عامر، مؤسسة على مصدرين، كأساس أضيف إليهما مصادر ومراجع أخرى مذكورة في هوامش القراءة. والمصوران هما: أولاً: ديوان قيس بن الملوح "مجنون ليلى". برواية أبي بكر الوالبي (عاش ترجيحاً بين نهاية القرن الثاني للهجرة، والنصف الأول من القرن الثالث). ثانياً: أخبار مجنون بني عامر ونسبه برواية أبي الفرج الأصفهاني (ت 356هـ) في كتاب الأغاني.
والجدير بالذكر أن ديوان المجنون، يوجد مخطوطاً في عدة مكتبات، ذكرها بروكلمان في كتابه عن تاريخ الأدب العربي، وطبع عدة طبعات لعل أقدمها طبعة بولاق عام 1285هـ. وهذه بمجملها تشكل المادة المرجعية لهذه الدراسة التي يتوفى الباحث من خلالها، كشف النقاب عن حقيقة مصدر من أهم مصادر العشق والجنون والشعر في اللغة العربية واللغات الحية.
