إنها رواية جديدة للكاتبة اليابانية المتألقة جولي أوتسوكا، تصف فيها المصير الضائع للألاف من الشباب الياباني المهاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة في فترة ما بين الحربين.
وإذا لم ترً الكثيرات من الشابات اليابانيات البحر قطُّ كما يشير إلى ذلك عنوان رواية أوتسوكا، فإن البعض كان لديه سبب جيد لعبوره، إذ يوجد زوج على الجانب الآخر منه.
في تلك الفترة، كانت آلاف الشابات اليابانيات ينفني أنفسهن إجبارياً إلى الولايات المتحدة حيث يوجد آلاف من المهاجرين من الشباب الياباني، ولذا، يمكن أن تحصل تلك الفتيات على أزواج من مواطنيهن بعد مشاهدة صورهم لدى (وسطاء الزواج).
منذ السطور الأولى، يجتذب هذا الكتاب قرّاءه لأنه يروي قصة خدعة جماعية... تقول إحدى الفتيات (على الباخرة، كنا جميعاً تقريباً عذراوات) وتؤكد هذه الجملة المرور العسير والمرعب في طريق البحث عن الزوج.
وفي الفصل الثاني، تصف الكاتبة ليالي الزفاف مع أشخاص مجهولين، أغلبهم من الفقراء الصعاليك الذين يعملون في حقول أرياف كاليفورنيا أو في محال غسل الملابس في مدن الساحل الغربي...
