هي أوديسة من نوع خاص، إبحار إلى ديار بعيدة دونما أمل في العودة، إرتحال مجموعة فتيات معدمات من أرياف اليابان وقراه المنسية بحثاً عن زوج يحفظ لهن عيشاً غير الذي كن يعشنه في مزارع الأرز البائسة.
بنات أغلبهن عذارى يحملن صور أزواج لا يعرفنهم، وألبسة تقليدية بسيطة، وأشياء أخرى حميمة يحفظنها بين دفوف كتب من نوع "مرحبا أيتها الآنسات اليابانيات!" أو "دليل المسافر إلى أمريكا" ويخبّئن بين الضلوع أسرار لا يبحن بها لأحد، ورغائب ومخاوف، رغائب أنثوية بفرحة العمر، ومخاوف منح الجسد لرجل مجهول في بلد مجهول.
رحلة شاقة في قعر باخرة قديمة تمخر عباب المحيط الهادئ بإتجاه كاليفورنيا، تنجاب حين أرست مراسيها عن واقع مرّ يرديهنّ إلى درك وضيع، حيث يكتشفن أن الواقع غير ما حملته الرسائل، وأن الصور المرسلة قديمة يرجع عهدها إلى عشرين عاماً، وأن الأزواج الموعودين عمال بسطاء في مزارع القطن والخضروات...
هذه الأوديسة هي حلقة منسية من تاريخ اليابان الحديث، أعادتها إلى الذاكرة جولي أوتسوكا، وهي كاتبة أمريكية من أصل ياباني، حازت بفضل هذه الرواية جائزة فوكنر للرواية سنة 2011 وجائزة فيمينا للرواية الأجنبية في فرنسا سنة 2012.
