رواية زوجات من اليابان لجولي أوتسوكا تحفة فنية تمزج بين الجمال والقوة، فهي رواية تحكي بدقة وإحساس شديدين قصة المهاجرين اليابانيين في أميركا، حيث كانت الأسر تُبنى مع نساء أُتيَ بهنّ من اليابان على طريقة تبادل الصور.
على مدى فصولها الثمانية الشيّقة، تواكب الرواية حياة هؤلاء اليابانيات، منذ وصولهن عبر السفن إلى أرض مجهولة، إلى أيامهن الأولى كعرائس، ثم عملهن الشاق في الحقول وفي بيوت النساء البيض، كما تروي معاناتهن في تعلم اللغة والثقافة الجديدتين، وتجاربهن في تربية أبنائهن الذين سرعان ما يخجلون من لغتهن الركيكة وعاداتهن الغريبة.
وتتطرّق الرواية أيضاً إلى موضوع صراع الحضارات والعنصرية المنتشرة في أميركا، وإلى قصة الجالية اليابانية التي نُعتت خلال الحرب بالخائنة ونُبذت وعُزلت، كاشفة بذلك صفحة مجهولة وسوداء من تاريخ الولايات المتحدة الأميركية.
ولعلّ هذا الأسلوب الروائي المتميّز الذي ينسج قصص التجارب الجماعية من خلال حكايا الأفراد هو السبب الأبرز لتفوّق هذا العمل الرائع وفوزه بثلاث جوائز أدبية مرموقة.
