من خلال سردها لسيرة محمد بن خليفة شيخ البحرين، تتحدث الباحثة في كتابها هذا عن جزيرته الصغيرة المستهدفة على الدوام والضاربة في تاريخها إلى ما قبل الميلاد حين تعاقب عليها الغزاة تاركين على أرضها بصماتهم وقلاعهم وآثارهم وأحفادهم أيضاً ليخلقوا شخصيتها المميزة بتركيبتها السكانية الفريدة والمختلفة عن سائر جيرانها من أهل الخليج.
ولم تكن محاولتها بعث صورة محمد بن خليفة من قلب القرن الماضي أو محاولتها لتاريخ الحياة والإنسان ممكنة دون التركيز على الأسطول باعتباره رمز الإرادة والاستقلال ومصدر الرزق أيضاً، ولكون ذلك "الخشب" أو "الفرس الذي يمتطيه مائة راكب" سبباً رئيسياً لاحتدام الصراع بين القوى الخارجية والإرادة الوطنية ومن ثم زوالها بحرق ذلك الرمز وقصة أجنحة الطائر الخليجي ومنعه من التحليق المستقل.
في عصر محمد بن خليفة وفي القرن التاسع عشر كان الخليج بأسره خاضعاً لبوارج السلطة البريطانية، وكان نزاع الإنكليز والعثمانيين على توزيع مناطق النفوذ هو المحرك الأول لكل الصراعات والقرارات وما نتج عنها من إشكالات أبرزها قضايا الحدود المتوارثة إلى الآن. ولم يكن ما يحدث في البحرين حالة معزولة وإنما كان جزءاً منها استراتيجية إنكليزية تشمل الخليج بأسره ولها مظاهر متعددة في التعامل مع كل دولة من دولة ولم تكن موانئ الخليج وحكامه إلا قطعة الشطرنج التي تحركها السياسة البريطانية حسب أهوائها ومصالحها، وكان محمد بن خليفة شيخ البحرين المنفي إلى سجون الهند مثالاً تأديبياً لجريمة الاستقلال عن تلك السلطة الغازية.
وتقول الباحثة بأنه وخلال عام ونصف، هي عبر إنجاز كتابها هذا، كان محمد بن خليفة ملازمتها على الدوام في الصحو والمنام، كان مائلاً في مخيلتها بحضور طاغ جبار، ومنه كانت تستمد الحماس للمثابرة والاستمرار، ومع رفقته الدائمة تعلمت الكثير وتعرفت إلى البحرين ومواقعها وآثارها وزارت قراها وقلاعها، وقرأت ما كتب عن تاريخها وتاريخ الدول المجاورة لها.
