حظيت بلاد الجزيرة الفراتية وخاصة الموصل بإهتمام عدد من الباحثين الذين تنبهوا إلى أهمية دراسة تاريخ هذا الإقليم ودوره في مجرى التاريخ العربي الإسلامي، ويرجع هذا الإهتمام إلى الدور البارز الذي لعبته الموصل والجزيرة على مسرح الأحداث في التاريخ الإسلامي العام، خاصة منذ مطلع القرن الأول الهجري نظراً لأهمية المنطقة من الناحية السياسية والإقتصادية، وإزدادت هذه الأهمية بعد ضعف الدولة السلجوقية، وقيام دويلات عددية فيها تمثلت باتابكيات الجزيرة الفراتية والشام.
وقد حازت هذه الإتابكيات والإمارات التي سبقتها كالإمارة الحمدانية والعقيلية والمروانية وغيرها على إهتمام الباحثين، في حين اغفل الباحثون دراسة الفترة التي حكم فيها المغول منطقة الموصل والجزيرة الفراتية بين سنة (656- 736هــ / 1258- 1335م) سوى بعض البحوث التي تناولت جوانب معينة من تاريخ هذه المنطقة، على الرغم من أهمية هذه الفترة ليس بالنسبة لتاريخ الموصل والجزيرة الفراتية فحسب بل بالنسبة للتاريخ الإسلامي العام، بإعتبار أن منطقة الجزيرة غدت مسرح للصراع السياسي بين المغول والمماليك الذي استمر لعهود طويلة.
ويبدو أن سبب تجنب الباحثين الخوض في دراسة تاريخ هذه المنطقة في هذه الفترة، راجع إلى إكتناف غموض بعض جوانبها بالإضافة إلى قلة المصادر التاريخية التي تناولت تاريخ هذه المنطقة، والتي لا تكفي معلوماتها للقيام بدراسة مفصلة للجوانب السياسية الإحتلال والمقاومة فضلاً عن الجوانب والإدارية والإقتصادية والثقافية، وعليه لا يجد الباحث إلا معلومات متناثرة ومتداخلة قاصرة عن تقديم صورة واضحة للأوضاع في هذه المنطقة ضمن الفترة التي تناولها البحث.
