نقدّم للقرّاء الكرام اليوم كتاباً يتناول رحلة شائقة لرحّالة بريطاني (هنري سواينسون كاوبر) قدم من أوروبا عبر البحر الأبيض المتوسط، وجال في بوادي سوريا والعراق في أرجاء الجزيرة الفُراتيّة، وصولاً إلى البَصرة على السّاحل الشمالي للخليج العربي، والبحرين وجزيرة هُرمُز ذات التّاريخ العربي العريق، فقدّم لنا نصاً مفيداً وممتعاً يمتاز إتّساع حلقة بحثه وتتبّعه لمصادر نادرة لا نجدها لدى سواه، ممّا أعطى نصّه أهميّة ومصداقيّة كبيرتين.
قام برحلته هذه إلى المشرق في عام 1893 كما يذكر في مقدمته "من البحر المتوسط إلى بومباي عبر وادي دجلة والفُرات ومروراً بالخليج العربي".
ويلفت إنتباه القرّاء إلى "أن هذا الكتاب ليس سرداً لرحلةٍ خياليّة أو إستكشافاً علمياً بغية إغناء كتب المؤلفين الرّحّالين"، بل هو مجرّد رواية شخصية لرحلة مفعمة بالحيويّة والوصف التّفاعلي الشّائق، ممّا يجعلها واحدة من أمتع رحلات أواخر القرن التاسع عشر.
كتاب ممتع ومرجع مهمّ، يغلب عليه أسلوب الرّواية الشّخصية، والوصف الدّقيق مع التقصّي العلمي للدّروب والمدن والقرى والأقوام الذين صادفهم في رحلته.
