الجزيرة... هذه الأرض العريقة في التاريخ، والتي نزلها الإنسان منذ أقدم العصور، وفي هذه الأرض القديمة التقت حضاراتُ ما بين النهرين بحضارات حوض البحر الأبيض المتوسط، فكان تبادل السلع والمنتجات والصناعات، كما كان تبادل في الأفكار والمناهج والآراء.
والجزيرة لم تكن في يوم من الأيام وحدة سياسية تامة مستقلة بنفسها عن الأقطار المجاورة، فهي إما مقتسَمة بين الدول المحيطة؛ كدولتي الفرس والروم، وإما تابعة بجملتها لإحدى الدول الكبرى؛ كالدولة الأموية والدولة العباسية في عصرها الأول، أو مجزأة إلى إمارات ومقاطعات يقوم عليها الأمراء والحكام المحليون.
ومنطقة الجزيرة ذات مدن كثيرة شغلت دوراً حضارياً بعيداً في التاريخ، وبعد قيام الإسلام استمر عطاء أهل الجزيرة الحضاري، فمن بلدان الجزيرة جاء أوائل المترجمين، ورجال الحكمة والفلسفة والطب ومختلف أنواع العلوم، كما جاء عدد من الإداريين.
ونظراً لأهمية هذه المنطقة، وأهمية الأحداث التي مرت بها بعد الفتح الإسلامي؛ لكونها أصبحت ثغراً للمسلمين في مواجهة الروم والأمن، وما قام على أرضها من ثورات وحروب، وما شهدته من هجرات للقبائل العربية بعد الفتح.
فقد اختار المؤلف (إقليم الجزيرة منذ الفتح وحتى نهاية العصر السفياني الأموي 17- 64هـ/ 638- 683م) موضوعاً للدراسة، إلى جانب ذلك، فهناك عدّة أسباب تجعل هذه الحقبة التاريخية تحظى بأهمية خاصّة، ومن بين هذه الأسباب: خلوّ المكتبات العربية من حيث قائم بذاته في هذا الموضوع، فضلاً عن أنه لا يوجد مصدر تاريخي واحد معاصر لأحداث الحقبة موضوع الدراسة انفرد بشرح فتوح الجزيرة وأوضاعها بعد الفتح في العصر الراشدي، ومن ثم في العصر الأموي، فضلاً عن ذلك: فإنّ أهمية الموضوع تنطلق من كونه يركّز على الموقع الجغرافي المهمّ للجزيرة، التي شكلت أداة الوصل والفصل والتوازن بين الشام والعراق.
